From Engineering Drawing to the Final Metal Part

A metal part's journey through the shop step by step: from drawing review and material preparation, through cutting, forming and welding, to inspection and delivery.

From Engineering Drawing to the Final Metal Part

Reviewing the drawing

Every part starts with a technical review of the drawing: dimensions, tolerances, material, weld symbols and finish requirements. At this stage we flag any conflict or missing information and contact you before fabrication starts, because fixing a mistake on paper is far cheaper than fixing it in metal.

Planning and material preparation

The drawing is turned into machine programs and nesting plans that reduce scrap, and the sequence of operations is set. The specified material is then issued with its certificate, and each piece is marked with a number linking it to the project and the material certificate.

Fabrication stages

  • Cutting: laser, plasma or shearing depending on thickness and required accuracy.
  • Forming: bending and rolling to create shapes and shells.
  • Machining: CNC operations for holes and precise surfaces.
  • Welding and assembly: to qualified welding procedures.
  • Finishing: blasting and painting or galvanizing to suit the operating environment.

Inspection and delivery

The part goes through dimensional checks and visual weld inspection, plus any additional tests specified such as non-destructive or pressure testing. It is delivered with a file of inspection reports and material certificates, ready to install without surprises.
