Laser vs Plasma Cutting: Choosing the Right Method

Laser and plasma are the two core technologies for cutting metal plate. A practical comparison of accuracy, thickness, edge quality and cost to pick the right one for your part.

Laser vs Plasma Cutting: Choosing the Right Method

How each technology works

Laser cutting focuses a high-energy light beam on a very small spot that melts the metal, with an assist gas blowing the melt away. Plasma uses an electric arc and a very hot ionised gas to melt the metal and blow it out of the kerf.

When to choose laser

  • Thin and medium plate up to about 20–25 mm depending on machine power.
  • Parts that need high accuracy, small holes and fine detail.
  • When you need a clean edge with no extra finishing.
  • Stainless steel and aluminium in thin gauges.

When to choose plasma

  • Thick carbon steel plate, where plasma is faster and cheaper.
  • Large structural parts that don't need very high accuracy.
  • Parts whose edges will be welded or machined afterwards.

Modern high-definition plasma has narrowed the gap a lot, but laser is still best for small details.

Other factors

Watch the heat-affected zone at the edge, especially in wear-resistant materials that can lose some hardness, and the edge's squareness and bevel. Send us the drawing, thickness and material, and we will suggest the cutting method that meets the requirement at the best cost.
