Client Requirement & Operating Constraints

A refinery needed distillation towers and hydrocracking unit vessels that run under high pressure and temperature in hydrogen service.

Strict defined criteria:

  • Fabrication to ASME Section VIII Division 2.
  • Resistance to hydrogen attack per API 941.
  • Full post-weld heat treatment.

Mega Steel Scope of Work (Execution Phases)

  1. Phase 01

    Design & Approval

Detailed design approved by an independent inspection body.

  2. Phase 02

    Shell Course Fabrication

Thick shell courses rolled and submerged-arc welded.

  3. Phase 03

    Tray Installation

Distillation trays and internal supports fitted dead level.

  4. Phase 04

    Heat Treatment & Testing

Full-furnace heat treatment and hydrostatic testing.

Engineering Materials & Alloys Used

Certified, documented engineering

  • 2.25Cr-1Mo alloy steel
  • 347 stainless internal cladding
  • 410S stainless distillation trays
  • High-pressure forged flanges

ENGINEERING BOTTLENECKS

The Project’s Complex Engineering Challenges

  • High-Temperature Hydrogen Service

Hydrogen under pressure and heat attacks steel and causes internal cracking.

  • Very Tall Towers

Towers over 50 m long had to stay perfectly straight.

ENGINEERED RESOLUTION

Innovative Engineering Solutions Applied

  • Chrome-Moly Alloys

2.25Cr-1Mo steel with stainless cladding and strict heat-treatment control.

  • Assembly on Turning Rolls

Courses assembled on turning rolls with laser straightness checks.
